The Razor and Blades Business Model

“When a company sells you a printer at a seemingly low price, but then charges significantly more for the replacement ink cartridges, it’s often called a “razor and blades” business model.”

Why do printer companies sell their machines at a loss and have the refill cartridges cost more than the machine alone? It should be illegal for printer companies to be able to “electronically” decide that you’re out of ink.

We are all likely familiar with these now all to common problems with today’s disposable, consumer capitalism’s methods to trap you and milk you for more and more.

Higher education is now officially using the Razor and Blades business model.

The free tuition for undergraduate students will begin in the fall of 2025 and will cover tuition and fees, as part of an expansion of the UT System’s Promise Plus program.

Well that’s interesting, they make so much more money on housing, food, and other costs, that they are giving the education away for free. Then they drag out the timeline to 5 or 6 years, and once you have invested your time and money for a few years, be careful when the trap snaps shut. Make sure you read the fine print and make sure you understand what you are agreeing to in the long run.
